Resolution of CIN at discharge was defined as return of the postintervention serum creatinine concentration to within <0.5 mg/dL of the preintervention or baseline value before hospital discharge. As recommended by the National Kidney Foundation, estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was calculated by the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation based on serum creatinine concentration, age, sex, and race.19 Chronic kidney disease (CKD) was defined as preintervention GFR below 60 mL/min/1.73 m2, and CKD stages were classified per the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative20 as follows: stage 1, GFR > 90; stage 2, 60 < GFR < 90; stage 3, 30 < GFR < 60; stage 4, 15 < GFR < 30; and stage 5, GFR <15.

Moreover, multiple formulas and definitions were used in other studies to determine long-term renal function, which may have also contributed to the discrepant results. For the purpose of our study, renal function was followed by estimating GFR using the CKD-EPI equation, as was recently recommended by the National Kidney Foundation.35,36 Furthermore, decreased renal function is associated with increased age.
