In addition, depressed patients display a shorter latency to first REM sleep episode, and the intensity of REM sleep is increased (Benca et al., 1997); however, these changes are not specific to affective disorders (Riemann et al., 2020). Many patients with depression show a diurnal pattern of mood variation, i.e. a low mood during the morning, which is alleviated throughout time spent wake towards the evening (Riemann et al., 2020).

2020, Neuroscience and Biobehavioral ReviewsCitation Excerpt :Observed architectural differences in Major Depression include impaired sleep continuity (i.e. increased sleep latency, sleep fragmentation, early morning awakenings, reduced sleep efficiency, decreased total sleep time; Benca et al., 1992) and altered sleep architecture. The latter includes decreased REM latency and increased REM density, modifications in non-REM sleep, such as reduced slow wave sleep (SWS), slow wave activity (SWA) and sleep stage 2 (N2) (Borbély et al., 1984; Kupfer et al., 1984; Kupfer et al., 1986; Armitage et al., 1995; Benca et al., 1997). Advances in EEG technology also fostered a new wave of sleep EEG studies in Schizophrenia.
