First-generation methods used manual caliper-based assessment or single-line echo tracking (Touboul et al. 1992; Hoeks et al. 1997; Boutouyrie et al. 2000; Selzer et al. 2001). Semi-automatic edge detection combined with standardized measurement protocols provided more precise cIMT measurements (Rossi et al. 2010; Molinari et al. 2012; Teynor et al. 2012) and is recommended by current guidelines (Greenland et al. 2010; Touboul et al. 2012; Mancia et al. 2013).
