On-demand feeding of young children, such as quickly responding to a hungry baby and serving snacks when asked, is seen as a way to counteract these threats (Graham, 1997). Leonard (1991) also describes preferential distribution to children during times of food shortages.

Graham (1997) reported that among high-altitude Peruvian households, younger children had better intakes and Leonard (1991), working in a similar context, argued that adults protected their children from low household food availability due to children's year-round involvement in key subsistence tasks. While children in these Amazonian communities did participate in subsistence tasks as well as forage on their own, their time invested in these activities has diminished as they now spend half their day in school.

For instance, within Peruvian households, male adults were more likely to face seasonal caloric stress than children (Leonard, 1991) and children were shown preference over adults in times of food scarcity (Leonard and Thomas, 1989; Graham, 1997). In Nepal, evidence suggests preferential treatment of young children over adults in food allocation (Gittlesohn, 1991; Panter-Brick, 1993; Gittelsohn et al., 1997).
