Perinatal cerebral intraventricular hemorrhage**

Intraventricular hemorrhage was found in 148 instances among 714 consecutive autopsies on stillborn and newborn infants. Increased incidence among the poor and non-Caucasian infants and among infants with congenital pneumonia was related to the higher incidence of premature births in these groups. Infants with intraventricular hemorrhage were growth retarded, the retardation having anatomic features of antenatal undernutrition. A role for hypoxia in the genesis of intraventricular hemorrhage was suggested by its association with hyaline membrane disease. Obstetric abnormalities did not appear to predispose to intraventricular hemorrhage.
