Smoking status was assessed by self-report of a single item with 9 response options [29] and used only in the adolescent sample. Adolescents could choose between the following response options: 1 = I have never smoked, not even a puff; 2 = I tried, but I quit; 3 = I quit after smoking less than once a week; 4 = I quit after smoking at least once a week; 5 = I tried smoking once in a while; 6 = I smoke less than once a month; 7 = I smoke at least once a month; 8 = I smoke at least once a week; 9 = I smoke every day.
