    We agree with Professor Norman Temple, that a legislative approach to salt reduction will be quicker and more effective than the voluntary approach. However, the harsh reality is that it is extremely unlikely that governments will support a legislative approach in the majority of developed countries given the huge power of the food industry.     Salt: the need for government action

    Brinsden and colleagues1 describe the decrease in the salt content of bread sold in the UK. They see this as evidence of success for the policy of voluntary agreements with the food industry. In actuality, a careful assessment of the facts and figures given in their paper reveals the failure of the policy.
