From Diabetes to Glucose Intolerance: 1979 to 1997
Following the World Health Organization’s (WHO) first Expert Committee Report published in 1965,9 the NDDG in 1979 defined diabetes in adults according to 1 of the 3 following criteria: (1) an unequivocal elevation of plasma glucose level, with the classical signs and symptoms of polyuria, polydipsia, weight loss, and ketonuria; (2) a fasting plasma glucose (FPG) level equal to or greater than 140 mg/dL (≥7.8 mmol/L) on more than 1 occasion; or (3) a 2-hour glucose level equal to or greater
Considerations for the current definition of prediabetes (increased risk for diabetes)
Prediabetes (IFG and/or IGT) should be viewed as a stage in the natural history of disordered glucose metabolism rather than as a distinctive clinical entity representing an interim condition and as a risk factor presaging (1) the development of diabetes (increased risk for diabetes) and (2) an increase in cardiovascular and possibly microvascular complications.
The transition from prediabetes to diabetes may take many years but may also be rapid.27, 28 Current estimates indicate that most
