The role of behavioural factors in explaining socio-economic differences in adolescent health: A multilevel study in 33 countries
2009, Social Science and MedicineCitation Excerpt :However, the strength of this contribution differs across countries. The findings underline previous studies which observed social inequalities in SRH in adolescence (Call & Nonnemaker, 1999; Goodman, 1999; Koivusilta, Rimpela, & Kautiainen, 2006; van der Lucht & Groothoff, 1995; Piko & Fitzpatrick, 2001; Spencer, 2006; Starfield et al., 2002; West, 1997). It needs to be acknowledged, though, that there are other studies that could not confirm a socio-economic patterning of health in adolescents (Glendinning et al., 1992; Rahkonen et al., 1995; Siahpush & Singh, 2000; Tuinstra, 1998; West, 1988).

2004, Social Science and MedicineCitation Excerpt :Researchers hypothesize that continuing exposure to adverse social environments, as indicated by stress, social isolation (Berkman & Syme, 1979; Kasl, 1984), and a lack of social control (Johnson & Hall, 1995; Karasek & Theorell, 1990) play a role in causing ill health, particularly in minority communities (Dutton & Levine, 1989; Laveist, 1992; Williams, 1990; Wilson, 1987). Despite the attention given to both health selection and social causation perspectives, there is evidence that ill health and poor social conditions may interact to affect socioeconomic status simultaneously, demonstrating that the perspectives are not mutually exclusive (Conley & Bennett, 2001; Dooley & Prause, 2002; Ensminger, 1995; Evans & Stoddard, 1990; Lichenstein et al., 1992; MacIntyre, 1997; Power, Matthews, & Manor, 1998; Raine, 2002; Vagero, 1991; Van der Lucht & Groothoff, 1995; West, 1991). The biosocial model, according to Udry (1995) is a perspective in which “biology and social environment naturally fit together in an integrated paradigm.”
