Description and purpose of neurodevelopmental assessments

AssessmentPurpose
General Movements Assessment (GMA)13Prechtl's assessment of General Movements assesses globally neurological development from birth to 4 months post-term age. It involves observation of specific spontaneous movements and is scored from a video recording. The GMA has excellent psychometric properties, including high predictive validity for neurodevelopmental outcome in preterm infants and excellent inter-rater reliability.
Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (Bayley-III)23The Bayley-III is a norm-referenced assessment of cognitive, language and motor development that can be used from 1 to 42 months of age. It has good psychometric qualities and has been extensively used in preterm follow-up studies with local norm reference information available.
Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS)22The GMFCS is a five-level classification system of gross motor function in children with cerebral palsy based on functional abilities, the need for assistive technology and quality of movement.
