The Framingham study was the first to show an independent relation between SUA levels and the risk of cardiovascular outcomes in the general population during a 23-year follow up period [34]. The underlying mechanisms are still not elucidated; insulin resistance is regarded as the interlink between hyperuricemia and the development of metabolic disorders [30].
